Successful automation of a city archive

Implementation of a fully automated high-bay warehouse with 533,000 pallet storage spaces

The challenge was to store a very large number of bulky load carriers with a low handling capacity. The operator of a public archive for file storage relied on the advantages of DAMBACH MULTI storage and retrieval machines (SRMs). The ability of a MUTLI stacker crane to operate in several aisles not only reduced investment costs, but also increased system availability. This is because each MULTI stacker crane can serve several aisles, which reduces the number of stacker cranes and ensures optimum capacity utilization. In order to further optimize the approach dimensions and storage density, DAMBACH opted for a single-mast design with double-deep storage for this project. The high-performance DAMBACH control system coordinates the interaction of the 15 storage and retrieval machines in 63 aisles. The installation team laid a total of 6,250 meters of rails, which underlines the impressive size of the warehouse.

The MONOFLEX rail guided vehicle was used to transport the load carriers in the warehouse pre-zone and within the company premises. Thanks to the flexible control of the individual vehicles, the material flow can be regulated as required in addition to the performance. Overtaking and parking maneuvers are carried out using 14 switches and numerous curve elements. This enables automatic sequencing and sorting processes to be implemented.

The 20 DAMBACH RAIL CART transport vehicles achieve travel speeds of up to 150 m/min with accelerations of up to 0.7 m/s². The special plastic pallets are transferred gently by means of a transfer unit. This ensures a safe and reliable process flow. To reduce power peaks, all transport vehicles are equipped with power caps for energy storage. In addition to reducing energy requirements, this also enables high fire protection requirements to be met. At the same time, the modern energy management system makes it easy to add further vehicles to the floor track system at a later date. The city archive can look back on a state-of-the-art storage infrastructure that not only meets current requirements, but is also equipped for future challenges.
